Born and raised in Appleton, Wisconsin—hometown of Harry Houdini, Willem Dafoe, and the world's first enclosed mall—Steven Hyden (city editor, Milwaukee) started his journalism career in 1991 when the James Madison Junior High Wildcat hired him to edit the sports section because he was one of only four boys on the 40-person staff. Steven imagined the other students gazing upon him in awe once his name appeared in print. In reality nobody noticed, teaching young Steven the first rule of newspapers: Nobody reads bylines. (Except if they hate you. Then they send expletive-spiked e-mails.) Somehow this didn't discourage Steven from working for his hometown daily for six years, though the time he ran over a dog while covering a rodeo in Manawa, Wisconsin almost did. Now a writer and editor for The A.V. Club, Steven hopes to apply his experience covering county fairs in northern Wisconsin to examining hip groups like these Arcade Fire fellers.
