"Lucky Ones" by Kevin Drew

Broken Social Scene's debut was called Feel Good Lost, but the group usually makes it surprisingly easy to stay oriented, dotting even its most confusing songs with sturdy outposts of melody. Spirit If… suggests that Kevin Drew is the first member fans can thank for that. "TBTF" somehow fits a pleasing tune to lyrics like "cats and Christ put you in a tiny box that's all victims who can't explain how they love their moms." But Drew makes the most of his solo-album freedom on "Lucky Ones," doubling piano and guitar into a hook that, in just a few notes, matches the wonder of any number of BSS songs—and justifies the sparkly unicorns on the album cover.
