In April, McDonald’s started sticking an American Idol-themed toy named New Wave Nigel into its Happy Meals—a toy that looks suspiciously like a member of Devo, complete with the band’s trademark Energy Dome. Devo is none too pleased—in fact, they’re taking the fast-food giant to court over it. Says Devo bassist Gerard Casale: “The New Wave Nigel doll that they’ve created is just a complete Devo rip-off, and the red hat is exactly the red hat that I designed, and it’s copyrighted and trademarked. They didn’t ask us anything.” To which he adds: “Plus, we don’t like McDonald’s, and we don’t like American Idol, so we’re doubly offended.”
