One of the hottest themes in movies right now is virtual reality: The Matrix and eXistenZ both revolve around alternate, computer-generated virtual-reality worlds, and even more VR-themed films (this week: The Thirteenth Floor) are on the way. Similarly, GameWorks—a high-tech chain of arcades envisioned by Steven Spielberg—prides itself on offering state-of-the-art virtual-reality games that pit one player against another, sometimes in different cities. But how does the real virtual reality of GameWorks compare to the fake virtual reality of Hollywood?
