Also Known As:
The Demon Lover, Coven, Demon Tower, Master Of Evil
Tagline:
"Lucifer lives!"
Plot:
Living in the middle of nowhere, it's sometimes tough to pass the time. Having exhausted the conventional distractions of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll, one enterprising, pudgy, kung-fu-kicking Michigan resident named Laval Blessing (Christmas Robbins) combines them all, ending up with a sexy, druggy, rock-loving cult. But as The Devil Master opens, discontent has set in among his coven members. Robbins attempts to resolve things in the most logical way possible: by summoning a demon.
Key scenes:
Unconvinced by Robbins' assurance that it's about "releasing and directing energy, not just screwing somebody," a foxy covenite rejects his invitation to join an orgy. Later, Robbins summons a hairy, dirty-looking demon distinguishable from its new master mainly by its horns. In one poorly lit scene after another, the demon dispatches Robbins' former followers, sometimes employing out-of-control cars, but mostly just ripping the bejesus out of them. A demon-free barroom fight, during which Robbins shoves an opponent's face in a bowl of popcorn, breaks up the demonic action.
Can easily be distinguished by:
The directors' just-point-it-at-the-action style might be charitably described as "New Wave-influenced," and less charitably described as "shitty." Also, the score seems to have been composed on the spot using a synthesizer made out of an Erector set.
Timeless message:
Don't summon demons. But if you must, try to make sure you don't get the kill-crazy kind.
Memorable quotes:
One future demon victim unforgettably observes, "Death is... It's a really heavy thing."
