"I'm not saying that traffic is running slow on the Hollywood Freeway," says hirsute, rotund DJ Mad Man Jack (Al Music) early on in California Girls. "But I just saw a turtle turn down a ride." In spite of such quips, not to mention the evocative call letters KRZY, ratings at Music's home station have taken a nosedive. Fortunately, the Mad Man has an idea. No, it doesn't involve fending off lawsuits from more famous DJs with similar names. It's a wild, 72-hour, $10,000 contest to discover The Most Exciting Girl In Southern California. Naturally, competition is fierce: Callers deluge Music with candidates, from the workout enthusiasts at Gold's Gym to karate students, and each caller prompts a leering montage sequence set to a popular song. Could The Most Exciting Girl In Southern California be a woman who likes to hang-glide to the tune of 10cc's "I'm Not In Love"? Not if three aspiring actresses played by Mary McKinley, Alicia Allen, and Barbara Parks have anything to say about it. "What can we do that's really special?" one asks. "We're just actresses." Yes, but even actresses have ideas. Soon, they've decided on "a Lady Godiva-type thing," and they've chosen Allen to buzz Music's office on the back of someone in a donkey suit. Mission accomplished? Not quite, since the calls keep rolling in and the movie rolls with them, capturing the sexy sight of female dirt-bikers hitting the trail, accompanied by Foreigner's "Urgent." The actresses persist in their quest, but L.A. keeps topping them, countering their nude-roller-skating brainstorm with semi-pro foxy boxing set to Blondie music. Finally, the threesome combines the time-tested element of nudity with the thrill of skydiving for a can't-miss scheme: nude skydiving. When they land atop KRZY's office, an overwhelmed Music takes his presumed winners for a nude plunge in the Pacific.
