How much love and excitement can three L.A. women find during the last days of new wave? Plenty, if a cardigan-sporting nerd who happens to look like a famous rock star is involved. Putting the daily grind of telemarketing, department-store work, and pet sales behind them, three roommates (one representative each from the blonde, redhead, and brunette camps) decide to hit the town. But their evening plans hit a snag when one (Virginia Madsen) decides to go it alone, in hopes of re-igniting her unhealthy relationship with a DJ too busy spinning the latest hits from Icehouse and Flow Joy to attend to her emotional needs. That leaves sulky Daphne Zuniga and spunky Cynthia Gibb saddled with cardigan-clad Clayton Rohner, Madsen's would-be date for the evening. Reluctantly heading out with Rohner in tow, Gibb and Zuniga search for Madsen, but meet resistance from their love-struck friend. They also spot MTV sensation Bruno X (also played by Rohner), and encounter just enough plot complications to send them back out into the L.A. night. "Nobody reads in L.A.," complains bookish Rohner, as they stroll past a bookstore. "I was a comparative-lit major," counters Zuniga. Whether Zuniga's knowledge of the world's classics helps her in her next taskmaking Rohner look cool via purple shades and hairsprayis never addressed, but soon the trio is off in search of his rock-star doppelganger, spurred by a smitten Gibb. Their journey takes them to the exclusive Club Voodoo, home of exotic fruit drinks, limbo dancing, and the occasional food fight. One run-in with a would-be rapist later, Zuniga recognizes that her love of reading dovetails nicely with Rohner's hot new look, Gibb surrenders her groupie dreams to spend more time with her friends, and Madsen gives up her fixation on men determined to treat her like garbage. Will their friendship withstand the death of synth-pop and a downturn in mousse sales? A final freeze-frame on their giggling faces suggests it will.
