With designer cupcake shops springing up on every corner, it’s hard to distinguish one creative confection from the other. From Georgetown Cupcake’s classic options to Cakelove’s customized combinations, there’s seemingly a new flavor, dietary workaround, or unique ingredient every week. But, at the end of the day, it usually just—ahem—bakes down to an overpriced, underwhelming sugar rush.
Fortunately, curmudgeony cake-lovers can appease their guilt with a free treat from Hello Cupcake in honor of its one-year anniversary tomorrow. The bakery is best known for a rotating selection of offbeat flavors—including the Velvet Elvis (banana cake with peanut butter frosting), Heart Of Darkness (devil’s food cake with chocolate ganache), and Lucy (lemon cake with sweet-tart raspberry buttercream frosting)—as well as both vegan and gluten-free options. There’s no word on which variety will be handed out, but our bet is on August’s featured flavor, Root Beer Float (“sassy, spicy root beer cake, topped with a foamy head of vanilla cream cheese frosting”).
This should be a classier alternative to Domino’s gimmicky Chocolate Lava Crunch Cake giveaway, but it doesn’t preclude the possibility of a sugar-addled battle royale. In other words, arrive early while supplies last.
