Exhausted yet? Too bad. The weeklong movie mayhem of SILVERDOCS continues by revisiting some festival favorites and adding some new gems. At 12:15 p.m. on Saturday is Derailed Dreams, which features five short films about ambition, including Polish tough guys and their fighting fish (Pawel Ferdek's “Glass Trap”), the failure of the world's largest shopping mall (Sam Green and Carrie Lozano’s “Utopia, Part 3: The World's Largest Shopping Mall”), and South African "surfers" who show off through stunts on moving trains (Nadia Hallgren’s “King Surfer”).
For a look behind the limelight, The Cove, at 4 p.m. on Saturday, features Flipper's TV trainer, who tries to redeem his previous cruelty by fighting to save dolphins from the Japanese fishermen. Alternately, Pop Star On Ice (6 p.m. on Saturday and 10:45 a.m. on Sunday) tracks the amusingly erratic career of skater Johnny Weir. And because most people couldn’t make it to the opening film, More Than A Game—a chronicle of the rise of five inner-city high school hoops players, including future superstar LeBron James—there’s a second screening at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday.
At 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, D.C. Council member and former Mayor Marion Barry is slated to attend the world première of The Nine Lives Of Marion Barry. This uncompromising biography is the official closing night film for SILVERDOCS, and will be followed by a discussion on Barry’s career by local pundits.
Finally, Monday is dedicated to showing the various SILVERDOCS award winners and repeat showings of the “best of the fest” films, as determined by votes from viewers.
