Mae, Jenny Owen Youngs, and Hotspur at The Black Cat
Virginia-based Mae made the ill-fated jump to Capitol Records with 2007’s Singularity, a record filled with radio-ready hooks. Unfortunately, it also alienated some of its fan base, who resented the dumbing down—and loudening up—of the former Tooth And Nail group, whose more varied, confident wavering between noisy emo-rock and pensive piano pop had made albums like 2005’s conceptual The Everglow stand out. Now, having split with Capitol and jettisoned two members, Mae is currently rediscovering itself by focusing on others via its “12 songs, 12 months” project, releasing a new tune every month and donating all proceeds to charity.
