    The director Jules Dassin specialized in hard-hitting crime films that were stylish and showed great affection for the criminal kind. His Hollywood career was stopped short by the blacklist, but not before he produced his 1950 noir classic Night And The City, which features an atmosphere of subversion and dread that characterized the Red Scare. Richard Widmark stars as a London hustler who meets the world’s most famous Greco-Roman wrestler and believes that the man could be his meal ticket. But as his ambitions run up against far more powerful forces, his plan backfires to tragic effect.
