Peter Bjorn And John and El Perro Del Mar at 9:30 Club
Peter Bjorn And John burst onto the scene in 2006 with the ubiquitous, whistle-driven pop anthem “Young Folks.” Though that inescapable earworm continues to haunt commercials and the occasional T.V. soap, the Swedish trio has happily moved on to more experimental pastures. 2008’s Seaside Rock may have gone a little too far with subverting audience expectations—it featured a mixed bag of instrumental tracks, spoken-word monologues (in three Swedish dialects, no less), and disparate influences from calypso to krautrock—but it may have been a necessary curve ball. This year’s Living Thing is similarly defiant of the shimmery, lovelorn mold of past success, but through the darkness it possesses familiar textured pop that will appeal to discerning listeners.
