Pree, Le Loup, and Nurses at The Black Cat

May Tabol tells dreamy front-porch ghost stories on A Chopping Block, the debut EP of her latest project, Pree. The former Le Loup member layers each of the album’s five tracks with precious auxiliary percussion and laddered piano lines, which results in a combination of folk, indie pop, and old-timey music. Tabol’s rough-edged voice—easily the band’s most distinctive feature—follows the familiar path laid by girls-club indie-rockers Regina Spektor and Feist, with the percussive nature of Modest Mouse singer Isaac Brock’s voice thrown in for good measure. Despite the record’s complexity, nothing is too busy or jumbled among the clean musical tiers of Tabol’s sighing hymns. Pree’s ability to snugly and almost unnoticeably fit in subtle touches is what makes this first effort so remarkable.
