True, the standard love ballads and weepy country bits are blah, and Borges often oversteps her voice’s limitations, but the group still has a fine feel for mixing brash blues and warm roots-pop. Borges attempts to move her music in a more rocking direction on the new The Stars Are Out, even trying out a Joan Jett-style sneer on “Do It For Free.”
