Sarah Borges And The Broken Singles and Eilen Jewell at Jammin' Java

Massachusetts alt-country outfit Sarah Borges And The Broken Singles fills out its frontwoman’s rough, singer-songwriter-esque numbers with punkish edges, Southern twang, and throwback pop on albums like 2007’s Diamonds In The Dark. True, the standard love ballads and weepy country bits are blah, and Borges often oversteps her voice’s limitations, but the group still has a fine feel for mixing brash blues and warm roots-pop. Borges attempts to move her music in a more rocking direction on the new The Stars Are Out, even trying out a Joan Jett-style sneer on “Do It For Free.”
