A Mouthful Of Thunder: Slow Burn

A Mouthful Of Thunder, Slow Burn

On A Mouthful Of Thunder’s Slow Burn EP, we find a band that’s hitting its stride. There are not a lot of gimmicks on Slow Burn; it’s just a focused and well-developed collection of songs. Throughout the release, this five-piece group displays an instant indie-rock-with-just-a-touch-of-punk appeal, with songs like “All My Blood” calling back to something a lot like ’90s-era Dinosaur Jr.

“I Will Remember You” stands out as a song that would be right at home played on any rock radio station. Simple vocals, a memorable chorus, and a toe-tapping beat make it not only a local gem, but a great song overall. In fact, listening all the way through Slow Burn, you get the feeling that any one of these songs could be breakout hits. They’re simple, the vocals aren’t Auto-Tuned or lost in a haze, and the guitars are actually at the forefront.

Slow Burn is made up of six solid and radio-ready songs that mark A Mouthful Of Thunder as one of Denver’s bands to watch in this new year. After a year that saw a lot of bands opting to go the drifting, dreamy route, it’s nice to hear a band making good music without all the trendy bells and whistles. It may be “just” a traditional indie rock record, but A Mouthful Of Thunder proves that when it’s done well, traditional is not bad at all.
