Feminism & Co.’s Play List tonight at MCA
Live music and free drinks (for guys)
The latest installment of this season’s Feminism & Co. series kicks off tonight, April 28, at 6 p.m. at the MCA, and it might just be the best one yet. Not only do guys drink free, as always (seriously dudes, don’t sleep on this), but tonight’s event also focuses on the topic of women in music, and it supplements the usual lectures and Q&A segments with some real, live women performing. Dr. Maria-Elena Buszek of the University Of Colorado Denver’s art history department will start things off with a brief history of women in music. Then Titwrench Festival’s Sarah Slater, writer and promoter Ru Johnson, and blogger Camille Brightsmith will talk about what they do and why they do it.
After the talking bits, performances by ambient-noise artist Married In Berdichev, hip-hopper Bianca Mikahn, and the uniquely indescribable one-woman band Christina The Hun take center stage, before the evening is wrapped up by a group Q&A on the growing presence of women in music, with insight into how it feels to be part of such a momentous time from the women who are a part of it. “[It’s] an evening for music nerds and the people who love them,” Slater explains, “with a focus on the ladies!”
Get there at 6 p.m. to mingle and enjoy the cash bar (again, free for the guys), with the program proper starting around 6:30. Tickets are $12 for MCA members, or $17 for non-members. For more info, visit MCA Denver’s site.
