You may know him as the Baron Of Bad Taste, the King Of Crude, or the Titan Of Trash, but one moniker that will never stick to John Waters is “by-the-numbers filmmaker.” Waters has made a comfortable living for decades by shocking audiences with such infamously raunchy films as Pink Flamingos, Polyester, and Cecil B. Demented. Where most auteurs fear to tread, Waters happily sets up shop, the yin to mainstream Hollywood’s yang. Now you can see the renowned director and gleeful purveyor of sleaze in person, when he appears in the Denver metro area March 10 as a guest of Rocky Mountain College Of Art + Design.

Participating as part of RMCAD’s Visiting Artist, Scholar, and Designer program, Waters will perform a show based on his acclaimed spoken-word routine This Filthy World. First presented in documentary form in 2006, This Filthy World is a fast-paced look at Waters’ legendary career through his own eyes, including his views on fashion, kitsch, art, sexuality, exploitation, and audience psychology.

Director of 16 titles over a nearly 50-year career, Waters is widely credited with creating a resurgence in interest in the exploitative trash film genre during his early career in the ’60s and ’70s. His crafting of loyal acting stable the Dreamlanders, including the infamous Divine, attracted an intensely loyal cult following among schlock-lovers of all stripes. But in recent years, Waters has proven himself to be more than a one-trick pony. Surprisingly mainstream offerings, including Hairspray and Cry Baby, along with a recent foray into the art world, have assured the Duke Of Dirt his place in cinematic lore.

Admission to the March 10 event is free, but ticket reservations are required. Tickets will become claimable, on a first-come-first-serve basis, Feb. 13 at 10 a.m. through the Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design website.
