Ideal Fathers pack it in, the rise of furry metal, and more
Say goodbye to Ideal Fathers
Our music scene is a busy place with lots happening. If you don’t obsessively visit the local blogs, alt-weeklies, and other outlets, you could miss something important! That’s okay—we’re here to help with a weekly roundup of some of the more enticing news happening around town.
• Punk rockers Ideal Fathers—whose 2009 self-titled EP we loved—have called it quits. The Denver band confirms, as reported by Westword, “We are, individually, in good health and spirit, though it is with somewhat heavy heart that we deliver the news of our disbandment.” Catch the Fathers one last time Sept. 3 at the Larimer Lounge.
• Denver’s premier (only?) furry-metal band, Extreme Turbo Smash, showed up on The Weirdest Band In The World blog a few weeks back, and last week made another online appearance over on Thrillist. The video interview with the guys in full regalia is pretty silly—and by that we mean awesome.
• Night Of Joy is in full swing. The Denver three-piece, which includes former A.V. Club staffer Bree Davies on bass, released its debut full-length this week over on Bandcamp. Cheekily titled Hardcore Girls Are A Hoax, the album is listen-only for now with a physical pressing and a downloadable version still to come. Get even more joyous later this month when the band plays what is sure to be a raucous set at Titwrench.
• On the topic of music fests we can’t get enough of, the UMS is this weekend. (Surely you’ve noticed the full-page ads in our totally indispensable print edition?) For those in need of a festival warm-up, the nice folks behind the annual showcase have put together a short video series titled “How To UMS,” a dos and don’ts of party decorum. Episode one: Do Dance Like No One Is Watching.
• Local comic Josh Blue has a few dance moves of his own to show off, and he does so completely unfettered in Rose Hill Drive’s newest music video for the track “Psychoanalyst.” The video is somewhat nonsensical, irreverent even, but also lighthearted and fun—kind of like Blue.
• R E A L M A G I C has some real buzz right now. A.K.A. Drew Englander, the one-man noise-pop act signed with Heart Music Group earlier this year, which released two free tracks on Bandcamp at the end of June. Those tracks have already found their way over to Death + Taxes and XLR8R. And to ice that cake, Heart Music Group just posted this dreamy, pastel-drenched teaser for R E A L M A G I C’s “Crip Tics.”
