January kicks off a flurry of benefit shows for 3 Kings owner Jim Norris
Series of shows culminates in TaunTaun’s return
When a spider bit Peter Parker, he got all kinds of wall-crawler abilities and superhuman strength. All that 3 Kings Tavern owner Jim Norris got when a spider bit him was the mountain of medical bills that come with uninsured overnight stays in the hospital. That doesn’t make Norris any less of a hero to the Denver music scene, though. In fact, so many members of the Denver music community felt a debt of gratitude for Norris’ artist- and fan-friendly venue that ZetaKaye House had to expand its planned benefit show—to raise funds to be put toward Norris’ medical debts—to a four-night extravaganza.
“It’s hard for me to say that I’m surprised, because I’m really not, because of how Jim is and who Jim is, [about] the amount of bands and people who have reached out, but the most difficult part is getting it to fit together,” ZetaKaye’s John Baxter says.
Baxter’s not exaggerating: His plans include 16 bands, most notably featuring local metal group TaunTaun’s return to the stage after nearly a year and a half on ice. The events are also set to make use of 3 Kings’ Phoenix Gallery, with DJs spinning in the basement each night and local personalities set to emcee each show. ZetaKaye House is diverting all money raised from This Ain’t No Cowtown Vol. 2 to the cause as well. The events start mid-January, and culminate in a reunion show Feb. 10. All shows are at 3 Kings Tavern, and tickets to all but the final show are $5, with the final/TaunTaun show going for the premium price of $7.
