John Common’s radical collaborations, Pictureplane’s lost track, and more
Our music scene is a busy place with lots happening. If you don’t obsessively visit the local blogs, alt-weeklies, and other outlets, you could miss something important! That’s okay—we’re here to help with a weekly roundup of some of the more enticing news happening around town.
• Because the world can never have enough viral video stars, John Common And Blinding Flashes Of Light are looking to produce a few more at this Friday’s TEDxDU conference. An offshoot of TED, the event’s theme this year is “radical collaboration.” Common and company will make the most of that by shooting a collaborative music video onsite using TED registrants and whoever else shows up with a camera phone.
• Pictureplane announced a summer release for his forthcoming Thee Physical LP yesterday, but who needs new music when there are way old, fan-uploaded tracks, like the one below, to be uncovered? He joked via Facebook, “[I] barely even remember making this song.”
• Bad news/good news from the Westword Music Showcase: Denver rockers Bad Weather California have been dropped from the massive local lineup, but only because they were picked up instead for a string of West Coast dates with the Meat Puppets.
• Speaking of Westword, music editor Dave Herrera wrote a nice blog last Friday about the final shuttering of Time Capsule studios and the shelves and shelves of master tapes it left behind. The real estate agent assigned to the property that once housed the local music institution—the building has since been abandoned and is due for sale in a few weeks—had the forethought to post the full list of found recordings in an effort to return them to their original owners.
• Denver band All Capitals is working on its own master tapes right now, and released the short video promo below from its current recording session at Macy Sound Studios in South Denver. The forthcoming EP is slated for release in a couple months.
