Kid Cudi at the Ogden Theatre
More Recap
Kid Cudi’s syrupy dance-floor anthem “Day 'N’ Nite” was released all the way back in February of last year, and has been riding a wave of success ever since (thanks in part to multiple remixes and some love from Kanye West). The staying power of a track like Cudi's generally means one of two things: Either he has what it takes to produce more great records, or he's about to fall prey to the doomed label of "one-hit wonder." Judging by Cudi’s performance Tuesday night at the Ogden, there should be no chance the Kid and his slow-mo flow will be resigned to singular song status anytime soon.
In front of a blazing screen of trippy and spaced-out visuals, Cudi stood alone with a microphone stand, belting out songs like “Man On The Moon” and “Make Her Say,” while carefully staying hidden behind his shades. He slowly came to life as each beat dropped, shoulders slouching back as he slithered the stage with an effortless cool, even popping his slender body into the audience down below from time to time. Flashes of tie-dye patterned lights and images of virtual clouds boomed brightly in the dark theater, and Cudi started in with an a capella version of “Day 'N’ Nite.” His bare flow lead into a full-on version of the track, complete with its infectious and stony beat, before morphing and climaxing into the more-famous Crookers' remix.
At one point during a welcomed encore that included "Heart Of A Lion," it sounded as if traces of Animal Collective’s “My Girls” began to drip from Cudi’s mouth. If this was in fact the song he was mumbling, the Kid’s coolness and relevance were immediately elevated. The audience visibly agreed: As his set ended, a good portion of the venue cleared out, failing to notice Cudi's co-headliner, Asher Roth, still waiting in the wings for his chance to shine.
