Utilizing the ultimate collaborative performance format, local imprint Laser Palace is hosting a round-robin label showcase tonight at Rhinoceropolis. The bands involved—Via, Hollagramz, Iuengliss, Alphabets, and Laser Palace founders Hideous Men—will set up in a circle and each will play short, consecutive sets. Candescent will open with a solo performance, and closing the show will be DJ sets from Sunfoil and Pictureplane.
The mostly cassette-tape label focuses on bringing diverse musicians and performers together on its split albums, and hopes the fluidity of the round-robin concept will also blur the line between the musician and the audience. And although each Laser Palace cassette is handcrafted and limited (usually no more than 20 copies each are produced), the label recently teamed up with Denver’s Bocumast to digitally release its back catalog. “[We don’t want to] be exclusive or elitist tape snobs,” says co-founder Ryan McRyhew. “The music is the most important part of what we do, and we really want it to be accessible.”
