Just Announced Mastodon and Opeth co-headline tour in transatlantic show of prog-metal solidarity

Don't let our use of an Opeth photo influence you. Maybe Mastodon is the better band...Or are they?

If you’re anything like us, you get in constant arguments with your one friend about who is really the definitive contemporary progressive metal band. Is it Sweden’s Opeth, or Atlanta’s Grammy-nominated Mastodon? Well now you and your buddy can stop comparing air guitar solos and have it both ways: The two titans of think-y metal are heading out on a pretty expansive co-headlining North American tour in April and May, including a stop at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver on April 23.

The tour will see the bands taking turns closing out shows, all egalitarian-like, so that nobody gets a complex over which one is really the bigger band. Isn’t it nice to see guys with such formidable beards playing nice like this? And if that wasn’t enough, Opeth is bringing along fellow Swede hard-rockers Ghost, the crazy conceptual metal band that sounds like Sabbath Bloody Sabbath-era Black Sabbath and stages its shows as if they’re literal black masses. So really, you can probably settle all those Opeth v. Mastodon rows by agreeing that the actual best contemporary metal band is Ghost. Problem solved.
