Mike Marchant says thanks to fans with three free EPs
Mike Marchant
Local singer-songwriter (and Widowers frontman) Mike Marchant had a pretty good 2010, and he’s giving credit for a lot of that to you—the fans. And to say thanks, he’s releasing his three solo EPs as free downloads (for an unspecified but limited time). That includes his solo debut, Outer Space And The Sea (which Marchant was kind enough to explain in some detail for us last summer), plus Indulgent Space Folk Vol. 2 and Indulgent Space Folk Vol. 3: Binary Beach. (Perhaps Outer Space is the untitled fist volume of indulgent space folk?)
Marchant explained via e-mail what you’ll get from the two ISF volumes: Vol. 2 is “a headphone jammer. Synth-heavy and pretty lo-fi, it works best through a cranked pair of phones. Lots of texture and noise. People either hate or love this one, it’s a pretty strange record,” he writes. “This was the first record I made after quitting drinking/doing drugs, and oddly enough is the most druggy-sounding record I’ve ever made.” That makes sense, because sobriety is the hardest drug of all.
Of Vol. 3, Marchant writes that it “falls somewhere between the previous two EP’s [sic]. It’s poppy and folky, but heavy on texture and electronics. Heavy analog synths and primitive drum sounds carry this one. I’m proud of this bizarre record, I explored lots of sounds and ideas that I hadn’t messed with before.” He adds that, “Thanks to reviews posted on a few widely-read blogs, this record has been downloaded by more people outside of the U.S. than in Colorado alone... Strange.”
You hear that, people of Colorado? The rest of the world is kicking your ass in Mike Marchant appreciation! Get on it and download these, lest we fall even further behind the French and Chinese. And if you already have them (or download them and fall in love with them), there’s more good news: Marchant signs off the e-mail with news that he’s forming a new band to begin work on a full-length—with songs already written—and promises details to come; we’ll deliver those details when we get them.
