Neon Indian announces fall tour, more details about new record
More Just Announced
News of a new record by chillwave progenitor Neon Indian shot across the Internet on Monday—before slowing to a more subgenre-appropriate, glacial crawl on Tuesday. But since details on the sophomore effort by Alan Palomo’s synth-psych-and-downers outfit were scant, most of that “news” was filled out with, say, flimsy conjecture about 2011 being remembered as the year “in which chillwave grew up.”
Oh, but we were all so much more foolish and shortsighted 24 hours ago. If only we would’ve waited for a full press release about Era Extraña, we would’ve learned more about Palomo’s solitary trip to write and record the record in Helsinki, Finland (“It’s the closest you can get to feeling like you’re at the edge of the earth”). We would’ve known that apparently darker-tinged Era Extraña follows the lead of Toro Y Moi into ditching the sampler for fresh scraps of electro instrumentation. And we would’ve had tour dates to report alongside the record’s Sept. 13 release date—including an Oct. 10 date in here in Denver at the Bluebird. Full dates follow, as does a video preview of “Heart: Decay,” part two in Era Extraña’s trio of instrumental synthscapes—which, if you’re still feeling like making something out of nothing, may also be a hint that Era Extraña isn’t a record at all, but rather an incredibly wistful, starkly photographed art film about a sighing man locked in mortal combat with his leather-bound notebook.
