Preview I Am The Dot’s Bridges EP
“We Have Not Arrived,” one of four new tracks
Fans of literate, wry indie pop have something to look forward to the week of Thanksgiving. (Well, something besides the annual overindulgence in poultry and pie). I Am The Dot’s latest EP release drops that week (Nov. 23 to be exact), bringing four new songs and two remixes of older tracks to mp3 players and tape decks everywhere.
Yes, that’s right: tape decks. In addition to the now-standard digital release, Zachary Tipton’s I Am The Dot project is the latest to embrace the anachronistic world of tape hiss, wow and flutter, and crappy dynamic range. Peculiarities of format aside, fans of Tipton’s excellent songcraft (also on display in Young Coyotes, the act that features Tipton alongside the considerable talents of Adam Halferty, one-time touring drummer for 3OH!3 and American Tomahawk main man) have plenty of reason to be excited.
The preview track, “We Have Not Yet Arrived” is easily Tipton’s most lushly orchestrated and well-realized song to date. Its layers of keyboards, female vocals, acoustic guitars, horns, and drums are a departure from the minimalist pop of his earliest EPs, continuing the trends of his more recent work and suggesting he’s becoming more confident as a songwriter and arranger over time—the horns are a particularly nice touch. Listen for yourself below, then circle Nov. 23 on your calendar.
