A poll about funeral songs reveals some sad truths about humanity

More Blog

Even in death, people are cheesy. That's one big conclusion that can be drawn from a new poll published today in England. According to AP, the poll lists the top songs the residents of Great Britain choose to have played at their funerals. But among the hymns and beyond-corny pop standards—like Frank Sinatra's "My Way" and Bette Midler's "The Wind Beneath My Wings," either of which you'd have to be a total sadist and/or failed comedian to inflict on your grieving loved ones—some semi-cool tunes popped up. Like AC/DC's "Highway To Hell" (a jam that somehow escaped making our list of tempting but inappropriate funeral songs over at The A.V. Club last year) and Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" (which he'll surely be singing at Red Rocks on June 2). Then again, the overplayed (and, sorry, sappy) "Over The Rainbow"—as rendered by the posthumously famous folksinger Eva Cassidy—beat out AC/DC and Cohen in the poll. Seems like you can take it with you... that is, as long as "it" is bad taste in music.
As for me? Easy. Crank this bitch at my funeral, and I'll be soaring to Valhalla on the wings of a Messerschmitt:
