Just Announced Sunny Day Real Estate reunites, embarks on fall tour

Sunny Day Real Estate

More Just Announced

Following up on yesterday's news (via our friends at avclub.com via Idolator) that seminal post-hardcore outfit Sunny Day Real Estate is reuniting, official word has come today from Sub Pop Records detailing a fall tour and album reissues.

The biggest news: The band will head out on a 20-date U.S. tour this fall, including a stop September 21 at the Ogden Theatre. Just before that, Sub Pop will reissue SDRE's debut, Diary, and its sophomore effort, mostly known as LP2 or "The Pink Album" for its blindingly bright pink cover. Both albums, out Sept. 15, will be remastered with bonus tracks and extended liner notes.

The other big news is that original bassist Nate Mendel (who makes his money these days in the currently inactive Foo Fighters) will return to the fold for the reunion. He didn't participate in the band's final two releases—1998's How It Feels To Be Something On and 2000's The Rising Tide—originally released after the SDRE's first breakup prior to LP2. He said this in the Sub Pop press release:

“I wasn’t around for the second version of the band that recorded the third and fourth albums, so I’ve always had a feeling of unfinished business there,” Mendel explains.  “We had all these outsized ideas back then, ‘Everyone’s going to learn a new instrument,’ and ‘Let’s do a rock opera,’ but before we could get anywhere with them, the band broke up. We left behind all these weird and beautiful songs, though, and they’ve stuck with me all this time. I’m really happy that we get a chance to play them together again.”
