The Dead Weather at the Ogden Theatre
More Recap
Alison Mosshart didn't collapse this time—although fans who witnessed the slinky chanteuse fall to the stage with her other band, The Kills, this past April at the Fox Theatre were still whispering about the incident as The Dead Weather crept onstage Monday night at the Ogden Theatre. Even without collapsing, though, Mosshart still managed to steal the sold-out show from her more famous bandmate, The White Stripes' Jack White.
From the moment the sultry, cigarette-smoking Mosshart slunk onto the stage, all eyes were on her. Her fierce energy, bewitching swagger, and powerful vocals seduced the crowd from the get-go. She belted out songs from the Dead's debut, Horehound (“Hang You From The Heavens,” “I Cut Like A Buffalo,” to name a couple), and prowled around the stage like a possessed rag-doll—arms, hips, and black, tangled hair flailing and jerking around to the beat.
Blue lights blinded the audience and submersed the band in a murky shadow. The heavy, fuzzed-out blues guitars provided a mighty backdrop for Mosshart's howling. And, while the energy level went down considerably when White took over the mic for "You Just Can't Win," it came as a welcome break until Mosshart returned on vocals to trap the audience once again in her mesmerizing presence.
The band engaged in very little banter with the crowd, besides a few quick thank yous and the seemingly out-of-the-blue question, "Anyone here think Bill O'Reilly and Glenn Beck are two Nazis?" before launching into the devilish "Rocking Horse."
The Dead Weather are certainly good on record, but the songs translate even better live, and culminated when Mosshart and White sung the soulful, eerie "Will There Be Enough Water?" into the same microphone. The chemistry in the band was electric, and the show an intense, sweaty, and totally satisfying experience.
