The Denver Roller Dolls make a play for Odeum Colorado
For those who have been awaiting roller derby’s rise to the big time—that is, aside from the books, the movies, and the cult fanaticism—the day may have come for one of Colorado’s own, the Denver Roller Dolls. The league recently announced a partnership with sports/entertainment gurus AEG Live, as well as Kroenke Sports Enterprises (which owns and operates the Pepsi Center and whose founder, Stanley Kroenke, owns the Nuggets and Avalanche). “This partnership is great for roller derby; for us to be positioned as a sport and good entertainment,” said Andrea Hill, a.k.a. Kendra Blood, co-captain of the league’s Green Barrettes squad. The shake-up includes a move to the 6,500-seat Odeum Colorado in Broomfield, a venue that Hill claims will “give fans the sporting arena feel without getting lost.” Odeum will host seven bouts this year from March 20 to Oct. 16. “Roller Derby is a fast-paced, full-contact sport that involves lots of strategy and strong female athletes,” Hill asserts. Season tickets are currently available by calling 303-405-1660 or 720-663-1155; single-bout tickets will go on sale Feb. 20 through TicketHorse.
