The Fray in the studio, ZetaKaye hiatus, and more
Our music scene is a busy place with lots happening. If you don’t obsessively visit the local blogs, alt-weeklies, and other outlets, you could miss something important! That’s okay—we’re here to help with a weekly roundup of some of the more enticing news happening around town.
• Have you been wondering what The Fray is up to? Dudes are in the studio right now, penciling down lyrics and pensively rubbing their heads in their hands.
• We just received word from John Baxter that all current and upcoming ZetaKaye House projects—including the release of This Ain’t No Cowtown, Vol. 2—have been put on indefinite hiatus. In an e-mail sent out this morning, Baxter wrote, “I have been battling with a lot of the same physical ailments that plagued me a few years ago … Due to this recent flair-up [sic] with my disease, I think it best that I step away from my current projects to focus on getting my health where it needs to be.” Rest up, brother, and get better soon.
• Send the good vibes all around this week and donate to Titwrench’s Kickstarter. The inclusive “queer and femme positive” showcase is looking to raise $3,000 by July 16 to help cover basic bills like venue rentals and travel costs for artists. You can pledge $1 or $1,000 (or anything in between)—every bit helps and gets you at least a hug and a smile from the Titwrench crew.
• Denver’s Milton Melvin Croissant III is already incurring some travel costs of his own. He’s on a short West Coast tour right now with Hideous Men and will soon be joining up with Dugout Canoe for a monthlong East Coast adventure. The second half of MMCIII’s summer starts July 15 in Nebraska and takes him all the way east and then south before turning him around again toward home.
• Time for music videos! Sure, you saw DeVotchKa’s “The Man From San Sebastian” last week on NPR, but did you ever catch the Yo Gabba Gabba! animation with a soundtrack by the band?
• Tripped-out in a totally different way, there’s also a brand-new video from Modern Witch. Directed by Sterling Crispin, “Desire” is an arty montage of light flares and ’90s hacker aesthetics.
• And, lastly, the guys in 3OH!3 also dropped a shiny one this week. The official video for “Robot” is about—what else?—a misfit robot that hangs out with cheerleaders and scares little kids.
