The Offspring, Alkaline Trio, The Vandals, Street Dogs, Frontside Five, and more, May 28 at Red Rocks
The Offspring
More Just Announced
Some things, like aging punk bands, never die. For better or worse, they are with us, among us, and always threatening to drop new albums and tours upon us. Who knows why—maybe it’s the punker’s give-a-fuck attitude that retards growth into any other occupation or maybe it’s the fresh crops of teenage fans that spring up every summer that makes these musicians feel vicariously youthful. There’s definitely something keeping these bands alive, and this year’s second annual Punk Rocks Festival May 28 at Red Rocks is as good a place as any to search for that elusive fountain of youth. The line-up includes headliners The Offspring (formed in 1984), along with Alkaline Trio (formed in 1996) and The Vandals (formed in 1980). That’s a collective total of 56 years of punking out. Now, who’s feeling old? Punk Rocks is supposed to be a take on punk festivals of yore, except that instead of cramping a hundred kids into a VFW hall, it’s inviting 10,000 to a world-renown outdoor amphitheater. My, how the times change. The old-school bill also includes relative newcomers—that is, they were founded this side of the millennia—Boston’s Street Dogs and Denver’s own Frontside Five. More Denverites round out the fest on the newly added 3 Kings Tavern stage which features Forth Yeer Freshman, Boldtype, The Outta Controllers, and Red Stinger. Way to keep it all local, guys.
