The Rocky Mountain Rollergirls partners with Live Nation, moves to the Fillmore
Shortly after the Denver Roller Dolls publicized their partnership with AEG and Kroenke Sports—including a venue change to Odeum Colorado in Broomfield—the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls, the state’s original derby league from which the Dolls splintered off from in 2005, made their own announcement: RMRG had partnered up with Live Nation for their 2010 season, and would be moving five of their eight home bouts to the Fillmore Auditorium; the first goes down this Saturday, Feb. 6, between the Sugar Kill Gang and Dooms Daisies.
As both leagues transition to new home arenas, the divergence in philosophy is clear: As DRD moves into the new and much larger Odeum, the RMRG will alternately embrace tradition at the Fillmore. (The venue, which originally opened in 1907 as a skating rink, has hosted derby bouts as early as the 1930s.) “We were in the market for a new venue to better accommodate our crowd,” said PJ Shields, a.k.a. Dangerous Leigh A’zon of the Dooms Daisies. “The Fillmore is part of the history of the sport, and history is important, but it’s also about keeping our bouts in Denver. This is the city we represent.”
Tickets are available now online or at the Fillmore box office.
