If you were to think of college radio, the image of a young Tara Reid spinning tunes and then maybe being murdered by a myth-obsessed killer would probably be the first thing to pop into your head. Right? But that image would be wrong! The sinister minds behind 1998’s Urban Legend had little, if any, interest in accurately depicting a realistic, multidimensional college radio station volunteer (or realistic, multidimensional human beings for that matter).

If you, like so many others, have had your image of college radio poisoned by popular culture, consider taking a moment today to tune in to your local university’s broadcast signal. After all, it’s College Radio Day, an industry-specific neo-holiday aiming to “raise a greater, national awareness of the many college and high school radio stations that operate in North America by encouraging people who would not normally listen to college radio to do so on this day.”

For Coloradans, that might mean tuning in to the University of Colorado’s Radio 1190 for a few minutes on the way home from work today. Just a simple flick of the dial, and your warped, blonde, horror movie-tainted perceptions about college radio will evaporate and be replaced by images of 19-year-olds struggling to find their place in the world through the spinning of records by Vampire Weekend, or whatever it is the kids are listening to these days.
