Watch Dessa’s MN Orginal special
Because of her role in the Doomtree Collective, Dessa has become known as one of Minnesota’s most varied, multi-tasking artists. One minute she’s spinning her voice into a book of essays and poems, and the next she’s putting in an aggressive performance with Doomtree at SXSW. Now add to that her own feature on Twin Cities Public Television’s MN Original series. This showcase highlights her performing, as well as speaking on topics ranging from her childhood (“most of my musical training happened while driving on the streets of Minneapolis”) to her writing process (“[rap lets] you build a complete narrative”). Dessa says she was drawn to hip-hop partly because of the word count, which makes sense for someone who started out as a slam poet. To get prepped for her show here tomorrow night at The Marquis Theater, you can watch the entire special here.
