Weekend Agenda, Sept. 4-6: Spend the holiday weekend with Ferris Bueller and Chris Hardwick
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
John Hughes is synonymous with teen angst. Although the writer-director willfully stepped out of the public eye in the mid-’90s, his string of youth-inspired ’80s flicks (Sixteen Candles, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Breakfast Club, and so on) have persisted throughout the years. His death in early August prompted two things: the ad nauseam radio-play of Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” and the ever-sweet local cinema tribute.
Six of Hughes’ most popular films—sorry, Mac, no Home Alone—will be screened throughout the weekend at the Starz FilmCenter for its aptly titled series Don’t You Forget About Me: The John Hughes Experience. The theater, too, is hosting a prom-themed party following Saturday’s show of Pretty In Pink. Formal attire and teased-out bangs are encouraged. And, natch, special “Save Ferris” bulk passes are available, which get you admission to the entire series and a ticket to prom.
On the topic of generational relics, let’s jump ahead a decade to MTV in the ’90s, back when The Real World was cast with ugly roommates and Chris Hardwick was the dreamy, swoopy-haired host of Singled Out. The television personality, seen lately on Chelsea Lately, is making the comedy rounds this weekend with a four-night stand at Comedy Works. Hardwick is as endearingly sarcastic and mean-spirited as you remember him, although these days his hair is much shorter. Still pretty hip-looking, though.
