30 Seconds To Mars, Mutemath, and Neon Trees at Fillmore Auditorium
Cynics rushed to lump Jared Leto’s goth-rock band 30 Seconds To Mars together with Dogstar, 30 Odd Foot Grunts, and other misbegotten musical movie star vanity projects. But Jared Leto got the last laugh when the band’s 2005 album, The Beautiful Lie, went on to go platinum and dominate alt-rock radio. Four years later, 30 Seconds To Mars finally released This Is War, an album delayed at least in part by a contract-related lawsuit filed by Virgin Records. Openers Mutemath is a more restless band than the windy hooks of its 2007 single “Typical” might suggest. Last year’s Armistice alternately builds catchy songs from dissonant elements, and while Mutemath’s still not the most distinctive thing out there, the band’s healthy curiosity counts for a lot.
