Atmosphere and Common at Red Rocks Amphitheatre
Atmosphere may be a hip-hop group, but its DIY style encompasses endless touring in a van, playing in grimy clubs, self-releasing (and self-marketing) records like the recent The Family Sign. The Twin Cities duo’s dynamic sound reflects this, with DJ Ant forsaking Casiotone beats and cartoonish gangsta themes for piano-heavy ballads and samples that evoke vintage soul, and rapper Slug spitting lyrics that hew closer to a Jim Carroll short story. Co-headliner Common has basked in the glow of commercial, critical, and cinematic success for the past few years. His latest, 2011’s The Dreamer/The Believer, earned mostly positive responses from critics, unlike his divisive 2008 release, Universal Mind Control. Whatever your opinion, Common is still one of the best artists in the hip-hop arena, peppering his shows with a mixed bag of musical offerings that will inevitably please everyone.
