Black Joe Lewis And The Honeybears at Bluebird Theater
It seems shocking that Austin blues-rockers Black Joe Lewis And The Honeybears have only been playing their gritty numbers for a couple of years; the raw delivery of 2009’s Tell ’Em What Your Name Is! suggests that it’s actually blasting from a garage back in 1960. Lewis howls wildly into his conversational guitar leads as though he’s dancing on a fire, while walking basslines and a powerful brass section flesh out a funky backdrop. Despite the Honeybears’ raw, dance-worthy grooves, lines like “Got a job at Mickey D’s / I work so hard / they’re fucking me with no grease” show that Lewis puts the blues first and dancing second.
