In 2008, Twilight author Stephenie Meyer big-upped the Blue October songs she listened to while crafting her emo-pire empire. Meyer’s rabid fan base has fervently embraced the band’s similarly angsty, violin-swirled melodrama and made 2009's Approaching Normal a modest hit—something that seems to have overwhelmed the group, judging by a recent tour cancellation stemming from singer Justin Furstenfeld suffering a severe anxiety attack. Of course, longtime fans may bemoan the album’s alt-rock-by-numbers sound: Like Twilight, it manages to make doom and gloom palatable to moms and preteens. Blue October maintains some sense of post-grunge edge in the “kill the bitch” rant of lead single “Dirt Room,” but the majority of the album’s songs sound like they were built for a new audience of eyeliner-wearing romantics.
