    Brandi Carlile at Paramount Theatre
With tastefully emotive songwriting and a soulful alt-country style that owes as much to Radiohead as the Grand Ole Opry, Brandi Carlile defies hum-drum singer-songwriter clichés. Performing since she was 16, the Washington-born musician was signed to Columbia Records in 2004 based solely on the merits of her home recordings, but the resulting debut album proved that a little polish goes a long way. Her brand-new album, Give Up The Ghost (released earlier this week), picks up where 2007’sThe Story left off—sweeping, tuneful songwriting that pulls a few heartstrings while begging to be replayed. This latest output also gets a boost from super-producer Rick Rubin and features a collaboration with Elton John.
