Charlie Hunter at Fox Theatre
Armed with his eight-string guitar, Charlie Hunter has established himself as one of the most revered guitarists in jazz. Not that he embraces jazz’s esoteric nature: Hunter has spent much of his life rebelling against the genre’s elitism, and he cites everyone from Charlie Parker to Dead Kennedys as influences. That said, Hunter breaks out his take on a Charles Mingus standard here and there. Baboon Strength, his 2008 release, managed to channel his many musical affections into a mix that’s playfully accessible. His new album, Gentleman, I Neglected To Inform You You Will Not Be Getting Paid, features a Hunter-led quintet and a much bigger, fuller sound.
