Spastic and yet still capable of surprising sentiment, Daniel Francis Doyle wrings jagged noise from behind his drum kit, creating live samples of guitar before joining in with machine-gun patter on the skins and bursts of vocals bled through a headset mic. While past releases like Who Are Your Customers? and History Of Consideration trafficked primarily in Beefheart-esque skronk, Doyle’s 2009 effort, We Bet Our Money On You, takes a quieter, "vocals first" tack. He dials down the splatter-punk bombast and reveals a knack for poppy, Jonathan Richman-esque melodies that find the telltale heart beating beneath those slippery floorboards.
