DJ Krush and Unmastered Soul at Bluebird Theater
The work of Japanese hip-hop pioneer DJ Krush evokes relaxation, an idea not typically associated with the form. His beats display a healthy variety, despite having a generally dark vibe, and are often laced with smooth jazz elements that are sufficient to carry the tracks in the absence of vocals. When he does feature a rapper, the beats are dialed back a bit, doing no more than necessary so as not to clutter up the guest verses. This is one of Krush’s strengths. He may not be the most prolific or notable artist of the past two decades, but he has a firm grasp on what he wants to do and, as a result, always does it well.
