The Enigma Of Kaspar Hauser at Muenzinger Auditorium

Much like Francois Truffaut’s The Wild Child and Michel Gondry’s Human Nature, Werner Herzog’s haunting 1974 drama The Enigma Of Kasper Hauser looks at what happens when a man raised away from human contact is suddenly thrust upon society. Also known under the more bluntly revealing title Every Man For Himself And God Against All, the film follows the true story of Kaspar Hauser (Bruno S.), a man who had been locked up in a dungeon for years and never learned to speak or walk. After being given lessons by a benefactor, he’s forced to socialize for the first time, allowing Herzog to comment on what “civilization” really means.
