Flobots, Houses, and Kinetix at Fox Theatre
Despite the truly horrible name, Denver hip-hop group Flobots has steadily moved from the rap underground to mainstream (or at least mainstream-ish) status; their live instrumentation and politically conscious rhymes setting them apart from most of the hip-hop pack. Starting out as a side project for MCs Jonny 5 and Brer Rabbit, Flobots eventually became popular enough to demand their full-time attention. Their major-label debut, Fight With Tools, broke the Billboard 200 mostly by word of mouth and with a little push from the supremely catchy “Handlebars” single. A follow-up, Survival Story, produced by Mario Caldato (of Beastie Boys fame), is due in the spring.
