    Futurebirds at Fox Theatre

If Futurebirds’ full-length debut, 2010’s Hampton’s Lullaby, was a weather reportit would be hazy and humid, with a chance of thundershowers after dark. In other words, it’s very much a product of Athens, Georgia—a sleepy bohemian college town that spawned a different kind of Southern rock, informed by punk, psych-rock, bubblegum pop, and whatever else you got at the used record store—since the days of formative R.E.M. gigs at the 40 Watt Club. Since that record, the band has released two relatively well-received EPs, toured with worldly road dogs Widespread Panic and Drive-By Truckers, and played megafestivals like Bonnaroo and Austin City Limits. Fortunately, Futurebirds have had time to work on new material, as a new record is promised in 2012.
