Gov't Mule, The Avett Brothers, and Truth & Salvage Co. at Red Rocks Amphitheatre
Gov’t Mule plays boogie-woogie rock that splits the difference between noodly jam bands and the riffage of Cream. Formed by Allman Brothers Band replacement members Warren Haynes and the late Allen Woody, the band continued on after Woody’s death in 2000 with a pair of tribute albums (The Deep End, Vol. 1-2) and several studio efforts, including 2009’s By A Thread. The Avett Brothers’ excellent 2007 album Emotionalism stripped away the frantic punk energy of their older material in favor of introspective lyrics and detailed pop songwriting. It’s no surprise that last year’s Rick Rubin-produced I And Love And You finds the North Carolina boys continuing to smother their howlin’ rock-roots with even more polished, heart-on-sleeve folk-pop.
