Grant Hart and Real Estate at Hi-Dive
Former drummer and co-leader of iconic punk trio Hüsker Dü Grant Hart—he wrote favorites like “The Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill” and “Diane”—pretty much vanished after a series of ’90s albums, solo and with Nova Mob, that never got the attention they deserved. (Barring a couple of unheralded singles, he spent the 2000s concentrating on visual art instead.) Though he certainly took his sweet time, Hart's new solo disc, Hot Wax, is a confident return. Backed by members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Hart kicks out a set of organ-driven rock showcasing his thoughtful, thematically ambitious lyrics, ranging from Buddhism to Greek mythology to mischievous imaginary friends. Recent live shows have been equally strong, finding Hart in complete command of the stage armed with nothing more than his guitar, melodious voice, and puckish sense of humor.
