The Growlers, The Brothers Chars, and Thee Goochi Boiz at Larimer Lounge
While Costa Mesa, Calif., misfits The Growlers border on ’60s surf-rock rip-offs, it’s their downtrodden vibe that lends them some spooky originality. This dark take on California sunshine comes courtesy of vocalist Brooks Nielsen’s soulful, goth-meets-Everly Brothers delivery, drenching themes of ghosts and seaweed in Devendra Banhart-like melancholy. The band’s 2009 release, Are You In Or Are You Out, is more polished and condensed than its previous The Greatest Hits, which stretched 25 songs out to 78 minutes of jangled beach recordings.
